About

India has over 442 animal sanctuaries, referred to as Wildlife sanctuaries. Among these, the 41 Tiger Reserves are governed by Project Tiger, and are of special significance in the conservation of the tiger. Some wildlife sanctuaries are specifically named Bird Sanctuary, e.g. Keoladeo National Park before attaining National Park status. Many National Parks were initially Wildlife Sanctuaries.

Wildlife sanctuaries are of national importance to conservation, usually due to some flagship faunal species, are named National Wildlife Sanctuary, like the tri-state National Chambal (Gharial) Wildlife Sanctuary for conserving the gharial.

Peacock

In Karnataka, for instance, the two peacock sanctuaries of Bankapura Peacock Conservation Reserve near Dharwad and Mayura (Peacock) Sanctuary in Adichunchanagiri have few visitors. Being the natural habitat of peacocks, the former is a shelter for 500-odd birds who face virtually no threat in their surroundings. But there is imminent danger of poaching in the form of locals stealing their eggs. An open fort area which was handed over to the animal husbandry department many years ago, here conservation reserve officials have to be on high alert
